KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 – Senior Labor Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has ordered the immediate cessation of construction and maintenance on the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang (SUKE) high-speed highway near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras, following a crane arranged collapse in the morning.
He said the work stop order was issued to allow an investigation into the incident where a crane overturned and crushed a car at the construction site.
“I understand the mishap occurred during maintenance and the area was cordoned off until the investigation was completed.
“I have also ordered that construction should cease, with the exception of the rescue operations, which are expected to be completed by midnight,” he told reporters when visiting the site of the incident here today.
Aside from that, Fadillah said, the project developer has also been ordered to find an alternative route for residents of a nearby apartment whose access road is closed due to the incident.
According to Fadillah, various agencies, including the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), the Malaysian Motorway Authority and the Fire Department, are currently reviewing new safety proposals before construction can continue at the site in question.
“I have directed the developer’s and contractor’s security department to put in place additional security measures that will be reviewed by the relevant authorities,” he said.
“Preliminary investigations showed that the SUKE Elevated Expressway contractor in the area had followed standard operating procedures,” he said.
