The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to conduct mandatory fire operations today at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge.

The potential fire site spans 133 acres at the end of Bayou Bend Road, west of Gautier-Vancleave Road and south of Interstate 10 in Gautier.

Mandatory fires are an essential part of conservation management to restore the native moist pine savannah.

These conditions enable the state to issue a burning permit.

The public should be aware that smoke can flow through some adjacent areas.

There is a possibility that roads in the area will be temporarily closed for safety reasons.
