Washington – A new information sheet from OSHA aims to help protect workers from hazards associated with on-board cranes.

Common on commercial fishing vessels, platform cranes move and load materials and catches. Injury and death can occur if the components or the operation of a pillar crane fail. Failure can result from inadequate maintenance, unauthorized modifications, improper use, lack of training and improper inspections, it says in the sheet. Appropriate training, regular inspections, and working within manufacturer guidelines can reduce risks.

The leaflet includes inspection, operational, and training requirements, as well as OSHA certification requirements. The resource also includes an eight-point checklist for equipment inspection.
