The Finnish company Konecranes has received a new order to supply a second gantry jib crane to the US Navy.
The Navy placed the $ 43.5 million order by exercising an option under a deal originally announced in December 2019.
As agreed, Konecranes will supply a gantry jib crane similar to the one ordered two years ago.
The crane will be tailored to the historic US Navy shipyard layout and installed on the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.
It will be equipped with the functions necessary to operate on the multiple rail section sizes located at the naval base.
In addition, the crane can be used in other shipyards with similar configurations.
The US Navy previously ordered a 175-ton crane for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Steven Waisanen, Vice President, Konecranes Industrial Equipment, said, “The additional order is an endorsement of the Navy’s continued commitment to improving its facilities and its trust in Konecranes to meet its current and future needs with unique products that are tailored to the strict requirements of the Navy. ”
Under the 2019 agreement, the U.S. Navy can order five additional gantry jib cranes. If all options are exercised, the total agreement could be worth approximately $ 300 million.
The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard was originally established in 1908 as a naval station on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
Long-term repair, maintenance and modernization work is currently being offered for the US Pacific fleet.
Konecranes focuses on the manufacture of cranes and hoists for various industries.
In the past year, the group’s total sales amounted to 3.2 billion euros. The company employs around 16,600 people in 50 countries.
