Konecranes launches an app to help crane operators with their daily inspections before and after lifting.

CheckApp is designed to help crane users record their results quickly and easily. These pre-start inspections are part of the documentation in the operating instructions for all cranes and hoists. However, Konecranes realized that thick paper manuals were not the most efficient way to conduct daily inspections.

Many countries also require these pre-launch inspections to be performed to ensure compliance with the code.

“CheckApp was designed as a great way to deliver an effective inspection format directly to every crane operator. Because it is electronic, unlike paper that can be lost or misplaced, it also becomes an accessible permanent record, ”said John Jackman, Sales Manager for Modernization and Light Lifting at Konecranes and Demag.

Mr. Jackman was part of a team that came up with the idea for CheckApp. The idea for this clever new app was the winner of a Konecranes global innovation competition.

“Almost everyone has a mobile device. By using electronic technology, we can not only provide a high quality and convenient inspection template but also include additional references for those who are learning to conduct inspections properly, ”he said.

“In practical terms, one of the most important functions the CheckApp does is to improve communication between someone who identifies a bug and to fix that bug through maintenance,” says Jackman. “Nobody wants an operator to use a crane with a potentially dangerous fault condition.”

“I am very happy that the app is ready for publication. This is a cost effective way for customers to record and retrieve daily inspection data that can be used for internal auditing and compliance, ”said Jackman.

“The app supports Konecranes Service’s mission to deliver intelligent technology and a digital customer experience to improve the safety, productivity and sustainability of our customers’ operations,” he said.

The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple AppStore and Google Play for Android devices.

Daily inspections

A daily inspection is a self-assessed assessment of the condition of an asset and an environment for safe use by the user or crane operator. It is not an expert review of the condition of an asset or component. Konecranes CheckApp for daily inspections follows the guidelines of the ISO 9927 standard and the applicable legal requirements.

Daily inspection records are available on the yourKONECRANES customer portal. In combination with the maintenance history and the status data recorded with TRUCONNECT Remote Monitoring of selected components, customers receive a comprehensive overview of the status of their assets in an easily accessible location. This data helps in the planning of maintenance measures and provides an audit trail for the daily inspections.

The “Daily Inspection” view in yourKONECRANES shows details of the daily inspection as well as useful summary views. Daily inspection details – showing who performed the inspection, when it was performed, what defects were reported – are accessible through the Activity, Summary, and Asset Fleet views. A detailed summary of the selected timeframe can be found on the Business Review tab.

The benefits include:
· Meets legal requirements and helps companies comply with guidelines
· Enables a simple and reliable check of the daily inspections carried out
· The user-friendly mobile app can motivate users to conduct regular inspections
· Helps in timely identification of potential asset-specific security or production risk issues
· Helps identify areas for improvement in the workplace
· Helps identify operator training needs and, in the event of non-compliance, comply with local safety and other site rules
