Gilbane Building Company and Versatile, Inc. have teamed up to test the new capabilities of CraneView 4.0, the latest version of Versatile’s non-invasive technology with a multi-sensor device mounted under the crane hook. With this technology, Gilbane is at the forefront of construction innovation, maximizing the optimization of construction site processes and compiling novel production data tailored to the individual needs of each project team. New tools such as 3D as-is data enable project teams to work more confidently, faster and more predictably to achieve better results.
CraneView 4.0 is currently in use by Gilbane in the general services department of the General Assembly building project in Richmond, VA. This new 15-story SF 415,000 legislative and administrative tower is the central part of a major modernization program for Virginia’s historic Capitol Square. Gilbane’s project team maximized the daily data reports to measure, analyze and improve performance for crane utilization, site logistics and operations, and safety. This resulted in higher performance and improved schedules, as well as a safer and more efficient workflow for subcontractors. By running multiple devices on multiple cranes, the project team was able to identify and mitigate outliers, duplicate handling, and inefficiencies in order to maintain optimal performance. The motionless metrics provided by CraneView enabled the coordination of deliveries in real time as well as the management of picks and an efficient workflow. To date, the project team has determined a utilization of up to 90% in the steel assembly and 98% in the prefabricated facade. Click here to watch the video.
“Our relationship with Versatile has enabled us to be at the forefront of new technology in the construction market. This technology allows us to analyze our performance on a daily basis and offers a truly unique perspective to get better results in real time. We look forward to seeing how this knowledge continues to empower us as we plan our projects – I think we have only just begun to see the potential, ”said Brett Thompson, Senior Project Manager, Gilbane Building Company.
Gilbane’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement aligns perfectly with Versatile’s vision of providing non-intrusive solutions for design transformation. CraneView provides never-before-seen production data for construction sites that is sent to Gilbane’s project team via daily summaries. In this way, decisions can be made in real time about workflow adjustments that optimize productivity and increase security. Gilbane was also able to incorporate other technologies into the project, including the Assemble software. Versatile’s CraneView data used with Assemble provides a virtual 3D model for weekly progress snapshots and improved client communication.
This solution not only helps the Gilbane team to measure productivity, but also provides a unique real-time overview of activities on the construction site. For 150 years, safety has been and remains Gilbane’s top priority. By combining the video and aggregated data provided by CraneView, Gilbane can carefully organize, review or adjust the workflow. The bird’s eye view also provides visual information for on-site and off-site employees to assess the safety of work in progress. Gilbane and Versatile Teams working together turn the new insights into on-site action.
“We selected the General Assembly Building team to test the new CraneView 4.0 based on their eagerness and suitability for adopting new technologies. We have a great longstanding relationship with the Versatile team. They provide amazing insights that enable our teams to achieve the best possible results for our clients. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Versatile and expanding the use of CraneView on multiple projects in the future, “said Jason Pelkey, chief information officer, Gilbane Building Company.
“I loved the leadership and innovation of the various teams I worked with at Gilbane. Versatile is honored to serve the General Assembly project team who are leveraging our latest technology and showing us inspiring new ways to act and benefit from all that CraneView has to offer, ”said Meirav Oren, CEO and Co-Founder of Versatile .
