BRUNSWICK, Georgia (AP) – The tower crane used to saw an overturned cargo ship along the Georgia coast is undergoing maintenance and repair.
Since the demolition began in November, rescue teams have transported almost two-thirds of the South Korean freighter Golden Ray in five huge chunks. The rest is cut into three parts. But first the crane that was used to spread the shipwreck and tear it through the hull is put on the side for maintenance. The pulleys and wiring are checked for wear and replaced if necessary.
Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Himes says it could be several days before the crane is ready to resume cutting.
