What are the personalities of whooping cranes like?

The great variety of representations and vocalizations of whooping cranes clearly expresses exactly how they feel. They are happy and dance enthusiastically. At the same time, some are very territorial and fearless (and aggressively) reacting to any perceived threat. Panting cranes are smart and always on the lookout – including the trail cameras we set up to monitor them!

Have you ever heard a panting crane trumpet?

Yes! Vocal communication is essential for these birds, which call out to each other to indicate brood, danger, escape or to strengthen the bond with their fellow species. The secret of this crane’s amazing volume and incline lies in its windpipe, which winds about 9 inches into its sternum. Overall, a panting crane’s windpipe measures 5 feet long which is as long as this bird is tall!
