The Virtual Construction Tradeshow, hosted by CM Labs Simulations, offers helpful demonstrations, sessions, networking and discussion panels for the construction industry. The virtual free event will take place on April 20-21 and will focus on new and emerging training technologies.

On the first day of the event, April 20th, Debbie Dickinson, CEO of Crane Industry Services, and Dan Belcher, Director of Strategic Partnerships for NCCER, will host a panel discussion on “Using Innovative Technologies for People Development”.

During the panel discussion, Dickinson will provide an overview of a case study highlighting how CIS worked with a customer to retrain and qualify employees – providing more skilled operators on site.

Unlike other programs, the company has not hired external crane operators for its needs. Instead, they identified current employers with a suitability for crane operations.

“The organization was proactively identifying forklift or earthmoving machine operators with the ability and interest to become crane operators, but needed assistance in implementing an efficient method of training them,” said Dickinson.

This plan of attack helped create a long-term plan for success that began with intensive online training.

CIS training areas:

  • Safe crane setup
  • Crane functions
  • Safety of the crane location
  • Introduction to load diagrams

This training period was followed by a hands-on session giving practical instructions on the safety and operation of the crane.

In the second phase, vortex simulators were introduced for crane operation training. In addition, the trainees were matched with an experienced and certified crane operator who assisted them with on-the-job training prior to the required tests and certifications.
