A $ 54.9 million crane, more than twice the capacity of the other Portsmouth Naval Shipyard cranes, arrived at the federal facility Tuesday.

“The increase in lifting capacity expands the amount of submarine overhaul and modernization work PNS can perform in the future,” said Brendan Goodwin, branch director of lifting and handling, in a press release.

The shipyard specializes in the maintenance, repair and modernization of attack submarines.

The new heavy-duty gantry crane is mobile and can lift 140 tons.

“Global events have put a heavy strain on our submarine fleet,” said Captain Daniel Ettlich, the shipyard’s commander, in a statement, noting that “the number of submarines available to the Navy at this critical time” , is increased.
