One man died and another was seriously injured near Hanover when a six-tonne bridge element fell onto the platform of a spider lift while it was being lifted.
The incident occurred on May 18 in Seelze near Hanover, Lower Saxony. The two men sat in the basket of a Teupen Leo 19T spider platform from the Bollmeyer rental fleet and watched as the component was lifted onto the previously installed bridge support columns. Then something went wrong and the bridge element fell from the crane and landed directly on the basket of the platform.
One man was crushed right under the bridge and is said to have died immediately, the other was seriously injured and flown to a local hospital, where his condition is said to be critical.
