KUALA LUMPUR (March 22): Senior Labor Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has ordered that construction and maintenance work on the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang (SUKE) high-speed highway near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras be halted immediately, after a crane collapsed incident on site this morning.

He said the work stop order was issued to allow an investigation into the incident where a crane overturned on the construction site and crushed a car.

“I understand the mishap occurred during maintenance and the area was cordoned off until the investigation was completed.

“I have also ordered that construction should cease, with the exception of the rescue operations, which are expected to be completed by midnight,” he told reporters when visiting the site of the incident here today.

That said, Fadillah said the developer had also been instructed to find an alternative route for residents of a nearby apartment whose access road was closed due to the incident.

According to Fadillah, various agencies, including the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), the Malaysian Motorway Authority and the Fire Department, are currently reviewing new safety proposals before construction can continue at the site in question.

“I have directed the developer’s and contractor’s security department to put in place additional security measures that will be reviewed by the relevant authorities,” he said.

“Preliminary investigations showed that the SUKE Elevated Expressway contractor in the area had followed standard operating procedures,” he said.

Three people were killed in the incident today when a girder crane fell this morning at SUKE’s construction site near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras.
