Hyzon Motors Inc. and Chart Industries Inc. have entered into an agreement to develop and manufacture a liquid hydrogen powered heavy-duty vehicle with a range of up to 1,000 miles.
Liquid hydrogen is stored with twice the density of the current 700 bar gaseous storage, so that a tank with liquid hydrogen can fill a vehicle almost twice as far. Liquid hydrogen also improves a truck’s payload capacity as the storage tanks weigh less than 700 bar.
Mobile tanks that store liquid hydrogen, however, require temperatures of -423 ° F. The partnership provides the opportunity to meet this challenge by combining Chart’s expertise in liquid hydrogen equipment with Hyzon’s experience in manufacturing heavy-duty vehicles using hydrogen.
“With the current technology, fuel cell electric vehicles offer solutions for back-to-base trucking models,” said Craig Knight, CEO of Hyzon. “The extended range would significantly accelerate the introduction of hydrogen FCEV solutions for road transport in view of the lower infrastructure requirements and the increased utilization of the filling stations.”
“With over 55 years of experience in manufacturing liquid hydrogen systems, we are excited to see this application for our liquid hydrogen tank on board,” added Jill Evanko, CEO and President of Chart. “Hyzon is a great partner for this – not only because of its fuel cell capabilities, but also for its customer base who are now ready for this long-haul, heavy-duty solution; not in five years.
