Bakı Vinç successfully completes many industrial site operations using Grove cranes equipped with Allison 4000 Specialty Series ™ fully automatic transmissions.
IZMIR, Turkey, March 2021 – Bakı Vinç Hizmetleri, headquartered in Izmir, is a vehicle and service provider for many different industrial lifting operations with cranes in its vehicle fleet. Bakı Vinç has been using Allison fully automatic transmissions on its various Grove cranes from 220 to 300 tons since 2012.
All Grove GMK 6300L, GMK 6300 and GMK 5220 rough-terrain cranes in the Bakı Vinç fleet are equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions.

With a maximum capacity of 300 tons and a main boom of 80 meters, the GMK 6300L crane can be extended to a height of 120 meters. The carrier of this two-engine crane is equipped with a six-speed fully automatic transmission Allison 4500 Specialty Series ™ and a Mercedes-Benz OM473LA engine with 15.6 l displacement, which can generate an output of 430 kW. The body is powered by a 210 kW Mercedes-Benz engine.
The Allison torque converter provides smooth acceleration of the crane assembly in challenging terrain. Kenan Kaya has been operating a 300-tonne Grove GMK 6300L model crane equipped with an Allison gearbox at Bakı Vinç for three years.
‘The shifting processes in Allison transmissions are very smooth. In this way, smooth shifts in our challenging processes offer a great advantage. It can be said to have the comfort of a passenger car. Although our cranes have a maximum speed of 85 km / h on public roads, we adhere to the legal maximum speed of 24 km / h when driving to the site, as they fall into the category of construction machinery in Turkey. However, on public roads we may need sudden acceleration to avoid traffic jams. In this respect, too, we are very pleased with our Allison-equipped Grove cranes, ”said Kaya.
Crane applications require precise maneuverability and start-stop operations in difficult terrain. Under such conditions, conventional dry clutches can overheat and burn when they reach their limits. Allison fully automatic transmissions are equipped with a hydraulic torque converter instead of a dry clutch. The torque converter hydraulically transfers the engine movement to the wheels and not only acts as a hydraulic clutch, but also multiplies the torque and ensures that the engine power is used efficiently. In addition, the need for maintenance and thus costs and downtimes are reduced due to the lower wear of the drive train.
‘We can use our cranes in many different areas. Ease of use and operator comfort in all conditions are at the highest level. We just focus on the steering wheel and the road without worrying about shifting gears. Allison fully automatic transmissions also offer great advantages in avoiding operator errors. As a result, our vehicles require less service and no costly maintenance and repairs caused by the transmission, “said Kenan Kaya.
The Allison Transmission 4000 Series ™ is available with a narrow or wide ratio transmission and up to seven speeds, including two overdrive ratios and a second reverse gear. A motor-driven power take-off shaft (PTO) and an integrated output decelerator are available as options, which improve vehicle braking and reduce brake wear. Operations are further enhanced by Allison’s advanced 5th generation electronic controls with forecasting capabilities. This means the 4000 Series ™ can be used under the most difficult conditions.
‘We also have cranes with automated manual transmissions in our fleet. We noticed some differences from Allison fully automatic transmissions. In conditions like muddy, rough and steep terrain, our Allison equipped cranes deliver more precise and uninterrupted power to the wheels, providing much controlled maneuverability and high traction.
