The long-haul vehicles will complement the parcel delivery robots that are already under development. Alibaba CTO Cheng Li announced this at the Global Smart Logistics Summit 2021, reports the Caixin media group. Alibaba’s announcement suggests industry competition in the use of autonomous driver assistants in commercial vehicles. Up to now, trucks have been neglected in the development and use of driverless systems, as they generally drive more slowly and work under less complex driving conditions, for example on motorways. Also due to the relatively small number of commercial vehicles sold compared to passenger cars, many manufacturers shy away from further development in this area due to a lack of profitability. Vehicles and components must a CCC certificate so that the products can be exported to China or made locally.
Although Alibaba’s announcement does not contain any further details, the logistics company Cainiao announced that it intends to use around 1,000 “Xiaomanlü” logistics robots on university campuses and residential areas from next year. Xiaomanlü, which translates as “hardworking donkey”, was introduced by Alibaba for the Cainiao facility last September. It is used for the last mile of delivery services. According to Alibaba, the robot has a self-learning, high-resolution navigation system that can independently plan routes, recognize obstacles and pedestrians and remain functional even without a GPS signal.
In addition to Alibaba, JD.com and Meituan are also testing their robot delivery services in the delivery area. Last month, the two companies were given permission to test their driverless delivery vehicles on designated public roads in Beijing. There the local government has issued certain rules to promote this promising technology.
